About the role
The primary focus is backend development, system architecture, and API design, with frontend capability as required. The role will initially lead the delivery of API-first projects (internal and external) and progressively take ownership of broader platform architecture and technical standards.
The expectation is that this person writes production code daily, leads by example, and provides technical direction through execution, reviews, and design.

Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems, APIs, and services
- Lead development of RESTful and event-driven APIs (internal and external)
- Own system architecture decisions in collaboration with the Development Manager
- Write high-quality, testable, maintainable production code
- Drive backend performance, reliability, and security
- Contribute to frontend development as required (React), but backend is the priority
- Actively use AI development tools (e.g. Copilot, ChatGPT, code generation, test generation) to improve velocity and quality
- Strong understanding of object-oriented and domain-driven design
- Experience with scalable, multi-tenant systems
- Strong SQL skills (Postgres and/or SQL Server)
- Experience with cloud-hosted databases (e.g. AWS RDS)
- Provide technical direction to other developers through:
- Code reviews
- Pairing
- Architecture and design guidance
- Set and uphold engineering standards (code quality, testing, documentation)
- Help support development practices around:
- CI/CD
- Automated testing
- API lifecycle management
- Identify technical risks early and address them pragmatically
Delivery & Ownership
- Own delivery of assigned projects end-to-end
- Work closely with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into working software
- Investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex system issues
- Ensure solutions are scalable, extensible, and supportable
Frontend (Supporting Skillset)
- Solid working knowledge of React
- Strong HTML5 / CSS3 fundamentals
- Comfortable contributing to frontend codebases (but not frontend-led)
AI-Assisted Development
- Comfortable using AI tools to accelerate development
- Understands where AI helps and where human judgment is required
- Able to integrate AI-generated output safely into production systems
